The Tonnara of Santa Panagia is a building located to north of Siracusa, in the homonymous promontory.
It worked until 60' years, today is in restoration.

We are telling you a history about the name of Tonnara di Santa Panagia, ancient and weak magnificence that you can admire at the end of the Rossana Maiorca's bike path in Siracuse. At the end of 1700, Domenique Vivant Denon, academic, writier and french critic, is located in Siracuse to study the Dionisio's walls and to find the plan that Dionisio had it built.
In his book "Travel to Sicily" Denon describes: "the most we advance along the Trogilo port, the most the tracks's walls become clear; after passing the Tonnara, called "Santa Buonacia" which is the palce where sea, one goes back in the city, creates a small cove that is grip and deep: we just find the famous walls built from Dionisio.

The academic refers to Santa Panagia, the siracusano district that corresponds with the ancient area of Tiche, to north-west of the beautiful city, so called Santa Buonacia.
Right, Santa Buonacia, from greek means "pan" - every - and "àghia" - Saint: Mary, the "whole Saint".
In this area, from the XII century, it was built the first tonnara
It was rebuilt after the earthquake of 1693, she lived years of splendor until the closeness in the 60' years, although it seems there are two declines in fishing nets between 1965 and 1970.
Today the place is in restoration and is closed to public, but you can enjoy, anyway, the grandeur of visible ruins on the stretch of coast among the most fascinating and articulated of Siracusa.
