The Apollo's Temple is the oldest Doric stone temple in Sicily. Today we find only two columns of his back and other few remains.

In the Graziella's neighborhood in Ortigia, The Apollo's Temple rises, the oldest doric stone temple in Sicily.
It's dated at the beginning of VI century B.C, it has been affected by several trasformations starting from bizantin period.
Firstly, it is trasformed in christian church, after the Arabs changed it in mosque and the Normans transformed it in christian Church, again.
In the sixteenth century on the ruins of the temple was built a barrack and, once the old church demolished, another one was built to the Madonna of All Graces.
Only in the second half of the nineteenth century, and above all from the forties, the area was interested by excavations to bring to light the ruins of the temple.

Today you can admire the Temple only from the outer, through the railings that limit the area: you'll see what was the back- the Greek temples had the prospectus facing east - which remains, unfortunately, only two columns and a few others ruins in order to testify the monumentality - the original structure predicted a very long builing, sourrounded by big columns.

Fragments of beautiul cladding in terracotta that designed the outer upper section of the Apollo's temple are preserved in the Archeological Regional Museum "Paolo Orsi".
