Travel trough the Latomie of Archeological Park of Neapolis: The Latomia of Paradise with The Dionisio's ear, The latomia of Intagliatella and the Latomia of Saint Venere with the Archimede's grave.

The Archeological park of Neapolis hostes some of the biggest Latomie in Siracuse: The Latomia of Paradise, The Latomia dell'Intagliatella - linked each other from a short artificially gallery - and the Latomia of Saint Venera. In the Neapolis district there is also the Latomia of Carratore.

Starting from Big Latomia or Latomia of Paradise.
Today it is a pleasant and suggestive place, originally it was a big stone quarry, mostly covered and subterran. Inside, different cavernes open, one of these is a strange artificial cavern with unexpected acoustic effects: a small hiss echos inside the cave until it seems exaggerated.
You are in front of Dionisio's ear!
The legend tells that it was excavated from the dictator Dionisio: he closed up the politic enemies and the dissenters so he could eavesdrop every conversations, without being seen.

Inside the Latomy of Paradise there is also the cowards' cave which was, trough centuries, thanks to her lenght and the presence of water, the house of the art of string manufacturers, the cowards precisely.

The vault is still supported by that pillars that the stone quarrymen left and you see big blocks well squared hang from the ceiling as colossal stalactites.
On the walls was excavated Byzantine funeral hypogeas, from which it takes the name of Street of the Tombs.

At the end, there is the Salnitro's cave, which name it taken from particular color of the walls, similiar to homonymous mineral.

Crossing the gallery and we arrive to Latomia dell'Intagliatella. Her peculiarity is the walls which are formed after an erision and atmospheric phenomenas.

Still from the Neapolis' Park, a charming staircase will bring you to Latomia of Saint Venera, full of green and dense flora.
You can see some clues of the nobiliar garden of nineteenth-century footprint which it was realized inside of this cavern when it was still a private property.
On the walls, we find many quadrangular niches with small votive squares, in terracotta and in painted wood, in which are illustrated the deceased as a knight or a soldier in process to offer.

On the nothern rocky grade the Necropolis of Grotticelli extended: here rises what the tradition calls the Archimede's grave, but truly it is a roman catacomb dated to some century after the death of the mathematic genius.
You can see it also at the outer of the Archeological park of the Neapolis, at the intersection between Street Teracati and Street Saverio Cavallari and along Street Rizzo, that coastes the southern part of the Park.
