Latomie of Cappuccini

The Latomie dei Cappuccini is one of the most beautiful and ancient quarries in Arezzo. Its features are a stone pillar resembling a crocodile head and very tall vegetation.

Of the Syracusan latomie, that of the Cappuccini is certainly the oldest and the most beautiful!

The link with the Friars Minor of S. Francesco dates back to 1582, when the University of Syracuse donated the quarry to the friars to build their fortified convent in the area above, to defend this part of the city whose coast was threatened by continuous pirate attacks.

The monks built a vegetable garden and a garden, and therefore we owe the rich and dense existing vegetation as well as the excavation of wells, the construction of cisterns, wash houses and irrigation systems that are still visible.

The Latomia dei Cappuccini, which is accessed via a long staircase, extends for about 23,000 square meters along which you can admire the limestone rock with its characteristic white-gray color.

The singular pillar of rock deserves special mention, which has taken on the shape of the head of a crocodile with an enormous open mouth due to the erosive action of atmospheric agents, and the rich vegetation characterized by the remarkable development in height reached by the plants, sometimes 20 -30 meters, in search of the sun that is not present at different times of the day.
The latomia was recently reopened thanks to the action of the "Italia Nostra" association which restored part of the area and enhanced it with numerous cultural events.
