Near Siracusa, The Maddalena Peninsula mooves everyone with her landascapes and her historical testimonies. In her heart the natural cove of Pillirina rises, between the most photographed sities.
A few kilometres to the south of Siracuse, in the inner Natural Reserve of Plemmirio, the Maddalena Peninsula is an extension of the south part of the bay of the Big Port.
Takes her name from the existence, till' the XIX century, of a small church dedicated to Maddalena, precisely, and it is characterized by coast cliffes on sea, by crystalline waters - all the stretch of sea that borders with it is preserved by the Marine Protected area of Plemmirio.- and by some important archeological remains.
The island extends till' the extreme tip of Captain Murro of Porco, called in this way because seamen assimilated it to pork snout, which where, often, you can see into the open sea dolphins on crossing.
To reach it you have to walk on foot a long trail that follows the entire cliff till the cove on sea, made by rocky ridges on overhang and overlooked by a deep cavern, known with the name of Cavern of Pellegrino.
In the heart of Maddalena Peninsula there is a magic place that hold in itself the whole beauty and the history of Siracua: Punta della Mola, know as Pillirina: a natural cove with two small beaches and a very extraordinary view on the islad of Ortigia.
This place marks the history of the city because from this point in 415 B.C. the Athens attached for the first time Siracusa in order to conquer it.
In the landscape in front of the beaches, still today, there are the remains of the soldiers graves of Siracusa which were killed in a famous war. You can also visite the barracks and the bunker of the Second World War.
