Palazzo Mergulense Montalto is one of the best and most successful examples of gotic chiaramontano in Siracuse Built in XVI century, it is located in the Spirduta district in Ortigia.
The Palazzo Mergulense – Montalto is located in the ancient Spirduta (“spidduta“), the island of Ortigia.
The building dates back to the fourteenth century and is characterized by a medieval prospectus with carved dark stones, typical of the fourteenth century architecture of Siracusa.
The facade has an arched door and three large windows with pointed arches, decorated with geometric and floral motifs. It is also enriched by a beautiful shrine decorated with corbels, below which you can see a large stylized “M” and the Latin inscription dedicated to Maciotta Mergulense, the noblewoman that decided to build it in the 1397.
In the XV century the Palace was offered from the Queen Costance of Aragon to the Montalto Family. In 1837 it is used as lazaret after cholera and it hostes the religiuos community of Daughter of Charity.
