Priolo Gargallo supervises interesting naturalist and archeological sities. Between them there are The Natural Reserve Saline of Priolo, the archeological area of Thàpsos and the PaleoChristian Church of San Foca.
About fifteen kilometers from Siracusa, near the Climiti Mountains, you find the city of Priolo Gargallo. Above all it is known for his industrial characteristics - it hosts different petrochemical factories - it is full of different religious and civil monuments, but also there are historic testimonies and place of naturalistic interest.
We reccomend three sites: the Natural Reserve of Priolo's Saline, the archeological area of Thàpos and the Paleochristian Church of San Focà.
Starting from this one. Discovered by the Archaeologist Paolo Orsi, the Basilica of San Focà is dated to IV century A.C.
It is dedicated to the saint Focà, patron saint of sailors, also called “the gardener martyr” because he was a gardener of a Black Sea’ city who lived between the I and II century.
The church was originally with three naves separated by thick walls with arches.
Today the structure is virtually unchanged, except the north aisle and vaulted ceilings (replaced by wooden roof) collapsed in the earthquake of 1693.
The Natural Reserve Saline of Priolo (salterns of Priolo) was created to preserve the portion of wetland that extends from Marina di Priolo and Melilli in order to protect the rich fauna of the area. The visit of the reserve allows you to discover and enjoy a little known but full of charm aspect that sharply contrasts with the industrial landscape that characterizes the surrounding area.
The reserve hosts a variety of birds whose flight can be observed from several observation huts. In addition to several species of migratory waterbirds, the reserve has, compared to other Italian places, the highest number of birds belonging to the species Caspian Tern (chosen as the logo of the reserve) and is the first example of nesting in Sicily for some of the species hosted.
The oldest soul of Priolo Gargallo is the island od Magnisi at the centre of Port of Augusta, important centre since the Bronze age.
The original name is Thàpsos which today remains some testimonies such as in the Archeological Museum "Paolo Orsi" in Siracusa, discovered at the end of eight hundred.
