 It is the main square of Catania where the three main roads converge. Surrounded by the Cathedral and other Baroque palaces, at its center reigns the famous elephant fountain.

Near Siracusa, the municipality of Palazzolo Acreide rises. Here in 664 - 663 a. C. the Syracusan Corinthians founded the colony of Akrai, destroyed at the height of its splendor, in 827 AD. C., from the Arabs.
Swallowed by the passage of time, it only re-emerged in the nineteenth century.

Between the remanis founded among the archeological 
excavations there is the Akrai Theatre, formed by the orchestra, the stage and the lower steps of the cavea, subsequently rebuilt up to the twelfth step.
​The main road axis was also discovered, intercepted by secondary roads, which wound between the two city gates, and then, on the agora, the remains of the bouleuterion, the building intended to house the council of the polis of ancient Greece​.

To the south of the theater, on a hill that forms the highest point of Akrai, there are the ruins of an archaic temple which, according to an inscription, was dedicated to Aphrodite.
