Near Siracuse, Augusta rises. Between the main attractions: The Svevo Castel, The Archeological area Megara Hyblaea and the Port.
A few kilometres from Siracusa, in front of Ionic sea, there is Augusta. The historic centre is an island, taken from a isthmus cut in the XVI century and connected to land by two ponts.
Between his attractions, we recommend the Suevian Castle, the archeological area Megara Hyblaea and the Harbor.
Built on the highest top of the island, the Suevian Castle has a square floor and it is surrounded by square and rectangular towers.
Through the centuries has been affected by many trasformations due to the different uses which is destined, but we can still find his suevian soul in the wide inner yard and in the colonnade with oval arches and cross vaultes.
The archeological area Megara Hyblaea houses the remains of an ancient greek column founded in 728 B.C. by colonizers from Megara Nisea.
It rises on a prexisting neolitic settlement and it is characterised by a city limit formed by different doors.
At his outer, Necropolis extended, within which have been founded materials that testify the richness and the prosperity of the city - today these are preserved at the Archeological Museum of "Paolo Orsi".
Destroyed by dictator of Gela in 483 B.C. and by Romans in 213 B.C. the city was rebuilt on a smaller surface and it has a new city wall. Today you can admire some of the archeological testimonies.
At the end, The Augusta's Harbor, the right place for give yourself a private moments. The Harbor is head office to the Capitaneria, it occupies the entire bay of Augusta.
It consists of three large sections:
Porto Xifonio which is the part of the sea between the two points.
Porto Megarese: the internal bay section of the north / west coast.
