Siracusa and the sea

From the city of Syracuse to the Isola delle Correnti.
Beaches of fine sand, and overhanging cliffs, rocks, gulfs, and pebbles.
The coast offers the visitor a huge choice.
There are several access points to the sea: from the island of Ortigia to via dell’Arsenale.
Then you have to go south, starting the journey to the deep south of Italy, to discover the wonders of the Arezzo coast.
An obligatory passage is that of the Plemmirio Marine Protected Area: the name of the peninsula derives from the presence, until the nineteenth century, of a small church dedicated to the Magdalene.
The emerald sea, protected all year round, offers a Caribbean atmosphere to those who decide to go and cool off in its waters.
Here you can even see schools of passing dolphins offshore.
A few kilometers further on we find the seaside resort of Arenella.
Today famous for its pristine and white beach, in ancient times it was famous for its wine.
Here, in fact, a sweet Muscat was produced, heir to the famous Greek “pòllion”, of which Esioodo and Pliny were greedy.
Along the sea, after passing Asparano (enchanting rocks and gulfs) you arrive at Ognina, characterized by the presence of a port-channel, an islet and "flat" rocks: a true natural solarium, where the wind and the sea have smoothed the limestone rocks and made them welcoming and comfortable.
Another 10 minutes by bike and you arrive at Fontane Bianche. Although somewhat suffocated by a concrete urban fabric, this seaside resort always retains its charm consisting of the white limestone rocks, from which the sources of fresh water that give the district its name gush out.
The lido di Avola, the beach of Calabernardo, and the lido di Noto are one: a very long strip of sand of over 10 kilometers, which is the prelude to the Vendicari nature reserve.
An oasis established in 1994 that is a paradise for snorkelers, who among the branches of the Posidonia try to see the thousand wonders that the seabed of Vendicari can offer.
To relax you can choose the long central beach that is almost never very crowded, or those of Calamosche, Marianelli, or Eloro.
The journey south can proceed towards Marzamemi, stopping first in San Lorenzo, one of the most crystalline seas in the entire province of Arezzo.
Marzamemi is a small fishing village, a favorite destination for tourists from all over the world, and here too beaches and cliffs alternate for long kilometers, until reaching the southernmost edge of Italy: Portopalo di Capo Passero and the delle Correnti, where the Ionian Sea joins the Mediterranean for a dream wedding.
