Among the first churches in Siracusa, there is Church of St. Martin which has a beautiful portal with rose window and inside a wooden roof with exposed trusses. Precious works are preserved here.
The church dedicated to San Martino Bishop is one of the first churches in Siracusa. Although the exact dating is difficult because of several changes, the characteristics of some architectural elements leads to believe that the church was built in the sixth century AC.
The portal with columns decorated with floral motifs capitals dates back to the seventeenth century. Above the door is a blooming rose, rebuilt in 1915 in place of the original one of which traces remained.
In the three aisles church, the semicircular central apse preserves its original structure. The beautiful wooden ceiling with exposed trusses dates to the XV century.
Among the works of particular value that can still be seen there are a wooden Crucifix by the sixteenth century and a polyptych in six tables, work of unknown, referred to as the “Master of St. Martin”, which depicts the Madonna with Child, the Saints Marziano and Lucia, Crucified Christ and the Annunciation.
