The Church stands on the place Santa Lucia, patron saint of Siracusa, was martyred. It preserves the "Burial of Santa Lucia" of Caravaggio and the catacombs of Santa Lucia.

The Church of Santa Lucia al Sepolcro stands on the place Santa Lucia, patron saint of Siracusa, was martyred.

Probably built over a byzantine church the actual building was built by the Normans over an existing Arab construction. Norman details can still be seen on the façade and the floors on the bell tower.

With subsequent restoration work and restyling due to damage caused by the earthquake in 1693, a portico facing the square was added which can be attributed to Pompeo Picherali, and inside there are  round arches and pillars by Giovanni Vermexio, which presumably cover the Norman columns. Thanks to more recent restoration work original details have been brought to light such as the wooden ceiling.

The church played an important religious role in the city of Siracusa. During the week of celebrations to honour Saint Lucia it hosts the simulacrum of the saint that is taken around the city streets in a procession.
Since the first half of the Seventeenth century the basilica and the adjoining convent have been home to a community of Franciscan monks.

From some months the Church hosts the precious painted of Caravaggio "The Burial of Saint Lucia": it is the most ancient painted realized by Caravaggio in Sicily, during his stay in Sicily following the escape from Malta.
The painted, originally created in order to be hosted at the high altar of the church , over the centuries it has changed several locations to return only a few months ago to his native home.

The church of Santa Lucia al Sepolcro is also famous for the catacombs it houses in its belly, the catacombs of Santa Lucia dating back to the third century of .C.
Formed by burial places, after changed in areas of worship, during the Second World War they are used as air-to-air shelter.

Today the difficult static conditions of the structure have limited the fruition, so it is accesible only partially.
The visit is always guided.
